This tour offers a unique and immersive journey into Cuba’s vibrant culture and complex history. It’s an adventure best suited for those with an open mind, a sense of humor, and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. Here’s what you should consider:

Local Life and Comfort
Our accommodation is in cozy, locally-owned guesthouses, known as casas particulares. Each room has its own character, and while they’re much nicer than typical Cuban homes, some luxuries might be limited. Air conditioning, plush bedding, and fly screens are often scarce. Power outages and intermittent hot water are part of daily life here, as are stairs and uneven streets – but these elements offer an authentic glimpse into Cuba’s resourceful spirit. We recommend reading our “Accommodation” section for more details to set the right expectations.

Connectivity and Internet
Cuba’s internet and mobile connectivity can be inconsistent, and reliable Wi-Fi is not always easy to find. Casas often provide Wi-Fi, though it may be slower than what you’re accustomed to. Consider this trip a chance to unplug from social media and fully engage with your surroundings. If staying connected is important, you may purchase a Cuban SIM card, though this process can take some time and service speeds are slow.

Travel and Activity Level
Rated as Easy to Moderate, this trip requires a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to walk on cobblestone streets and navigate stairs. No special skills are needed for the activities, just enthusiasm to participate and a good level of mobility. This tour also covers a fair amount of ground, with some long travel days (up to seven hours on certain days). We’ll travel in a private, air-conditioned coach, providing plenty of time to relax and connect with fellow travelers along the way.

A Step Back in Time
Cuba operates a bit differently than most places – and that’s part of its charm! Daily challenges like limited product availability, sporadic ATM access, and slow-moving bureaucracy are reminders of the island’s unique history and economic landscape. Our tour leader is here to help you navigate Cuba’s quirks and ensure a smooth experience, but patience and flexibility will enhance your journey.

Suitability
Due to the nature of the terrain and accommodations, this tour is not fully wheelchair accessible but may be suitable for travelers with reduced mobility. If you have specific mobility needs, please reach out to our team to discuss if this trip will be a good fit for you.

If you’re excited by the idea of discovering Cuba’s colorful streets, learning its stories, and adapting to its unique pace of life, this tour may be just right for you!

Accommodation: A Unique Stay in Casas Particulares

Our tour offers a truly authentic experience with stays in casas particulares, Cuban guesthouses that reflect the warmth and hospitality of local life. Casas are family-owned homes that provide an intimate alternative to traditional hotels, giving you a unique insight into Cuban culture and daily life.

What to Expect in a Casa Particular
Staying in a casa particular is often compared to a bed-and-breakfast, but it offers a far more personal touch. Many of the homeowners (and sometimes their families) live on-site, so you’ll have meaningful interactions and enjoy a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Expect lively “Spanglish” conversations, generous breakfasts, and perhaps even a few new friends!

Each casa we select is carefully chosen for comfort and character. Casas are typically modest yet colorful, with simple furnishings, tiled floors, and air conditioning. Each room comes with a private bathroom. However, you may not find the usual hotel luxuries such as plush pillows, in-room safes, or hairdryers, and amenities can vary between properties.

Location and Convenience
We aim to book your accommodation close to central areas, such as Old Havana, to allow easy access to local attractions and nightlife. Due to the limited number of rooms (usually three to four per casa), we often use multiple casas within close proximity to accommodate our group. This arrangement also allows for a more intimate and immersive experience.

Practical Considerations
Cuba is a country of resourcefulness, and certain comforts may be limited. Power cuts and fluctuating water pressure are common occurrences, and hot water may not always be guaranteed. We recommend bringing a flashlight for potential blackouts and mosquito repellent for when windows are open. Additionally, most casas do not have elevators, so be prepared to carry your luggage up stairs if necessary. Some hosts offer laundry services for a small fee, which can be helpful during your stay.

Pre- and Post-Tour Accommodation
While we do our best to arrange accommodations in Old Havana for pre- and post-tour stays, availability may sometimes require us to book in nearby areas like Central Havana or Vedado. If you have specific preferences, please let us know, and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

A Holiday from Technology
Internet connectivity is limited in Cuba, and Wi-Fi in casas is often slow or unavailable. Treat your time here as an opportunity to unplug, immerse yourself in the moment, and engage with Cuba’s fascinating culture.

Staying in a casa particular is an essential part of the Cuban experience, offering you a deeper connection with the culture, history, and people of this captivating island. Embrace the charm of Cuban hospitality and enjoy the unforgettable warmth of your hosts.

Casas Particulares Comfort Levels Explained

In Cuba, staying in a casa particular offers an authentic, welcoming experience with the added benefit of local hospitality. The comfort levels of these casas vary by region and style, but all our casas are carefully selected to provide air-conditioned rooms and high standards of cleanliness and comfort. Thanks to our sister company, Düş Patikası, which has long been established in Cuba, we have strong local connections that allow us to secure the best casas in each area. Here’s a guide to the comfort levels you can expect:

Luxurious Villas

Our luxurious villas are a rare treat in Cuba, offering the highest level of comfort, style, and amenities. These properties are carefully selected to provide a more refined experience while still preserving the charm and authenticity of Cuban culture. Luxurious villas feature spacious rooms, elegant decor, en-suite bathrooms, and additional amenities that elevate your stay. Although these are less common, we ensure access to some of the finest casas through our local connections. Ideal for those seeking a more upscale Cuban experience, luxurious villas provide both comfort and character.

Comfort

Comfort-level casas offer a cozy, well-appointed experience with a blend of modern conveniences and local charm. Most of our casas in Havana fall into this category, featuring spacious, air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms and tasteful decor that reflects Cuban style. Located in multi-story buildings with easy access to Havana’s attractions, these casas provide a warm and comfortable base for exploring the city. Comfort casas in Havana balance the traditional charm of Cuba with the conveniences travelers expect.

Standard

Standard casas provide all the essentials in a classic Cuban setting. In Trinidad, most casas are of this standard, offering simple yet clean and inviting rooms, each with air conditioning and a private bathroom. These casas often feature vibrant Cuban decor, rustic wooden furniture, and colonial architecture that transports you to another era. While they may not have luxury amenities, they are well-maintained, and our hosts ensure you have everything you need for a pleasant stay.

Basic

Basic casas are modest, one-story homes often nestled in a garden or rural setting, offering a down-to-earth and peaceful experience. Most casas in Viñales fall under this category, with rooms that are simple yet comfortable, featuring air conditioning, private bathrooms, and access to lush green surroundings. Basic casas embody the relaxed rural lifestyle of Viñales, and while they may have fewer amenities, they offer a unique opportunity to connect with the local environment and culture.

No matter which level of casa particular you choose, you’ll experience the warmth and genuine hospitality that make Cuban guesthouses special. Thanks to our longstanding local connections, we work hard to ensure that every casa meets our standards, allowing you to enjoy an authentic, comfortable, and unforgettable stay in Cuba.

Arrival Details
You may arrive at any time on Day 1, but please note that the welcome briefing typically takes place on the morning of Day 2. This allows for flexibility, as many flights arrive in the evening. We recommend arriving early to get settled and to begin immersing yourself in Havana’s vibrant atmosphere.

Airport and Transfers
Your arrival airport is Havana International Airport (HAV). If you have a confirmed arrival transfer with us, a representative will meet you just outside your arrival terminal. Look for someone holding a sign with “Volkan’s Adventures” to guide you to your accommodation. In the event of flight cancellations, unexpected delays in immigration or baggage collection, or if you have trouble locating your driver, please contact Volkan directly for assistance.

If you do not receive this information at least one week before your departure, or if you need the details earlier, please reach out to our office for assistance.

Passport Requirements
When traveling internationally, please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your scheduled return date. Additionally, many countries require at least two blank pages in your passport for entry stamps. Make sure the details on your booking match your passport exactly to avoid any issues.

Visa Requirements

It is each traveler’s responsibility to secure the appropriate visa for entry into Cuba, as well as any other countries you may be transiting through. Visa requirements can vary by nationality and are subject to change, so we recommend checking with the Cuban consulate or embassy as soon as your trip is booked to ensure ample time for processing. Alternatively through this link, you can obtain your visas/tourist cards and receive assistance with all required documentation, as well as information about ESTA requirements for U.S. travelers.

Important Information for U.S. Travelers and ESTA Holders
For travelers who may need an ESTA to enter the United States after visiting Cuba, rest assured that Cuban authorities do not stamp passports upon entry or exit, unless specifically requested. This means there is no visible record of your visit to Cuba in your passport, effectively leaving no official trace of your travel. However, it remains each traveler’s responsibility to comply with U.S. entry requirements. For additional guidance, please refer to the U.S. Department of State website or consult with an immigration advisor if you have concerns.

Cuba Entry Requirements
Most travelers to Cuba, including those from the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, are required to obtain a Tourist Card (Tarjeta de Turista), which allows a stay of up to 30 days. If you are based in the UK or Ireland, we may be able to provide you with a green tourist card for Cuba, which will be mailed to you approximately three to four weeks before your departure. Please follow the instructions carefully when completing it, as errors may require purchasing a new card.

Please note that traveling to Cuba via the USA has additional requirements. Tourist cards provided by us are not valid if you transit through the USA. Instead, you must purchase a pink tourist card, only available in the USA, and you may need to meet the same entry regulations as U.S. citizens. For this reason, we do not recommend traveling to Cuba via the USA.

Special Requirements for U.S. Passport Holders
If you hold a U.S. passport or are traveling from the United States, please be aware of current regulations regarding travel to Cuba. U.S. citizens are typically required to apply for an e-visa to enter Cuba, and some airlines include this in the ticket price. Check with your airline or apply directly at www.cubavisaservices.com. Additionally, for compliance with U.S. regulations, you should keep a copy of your itinerary and all relevant documents related to the trip for at least five years.

Pre-Arrival Requirements
All travelers must complete a D’Viajeros form within seven days before arriving in Cuba. This mandatory health and customs declaration form can be accessed at www.dviajeros.mitrans.gob.cu/inicio. The form generates a QR code, which you will need to present at check-in and upon arrival in Cuba, so we recommend keeping a digital copy or printed photo of this code. For advice on how to complete it, consult our Help Sheet

Travel Insurance
Cuba requires all visitors to have travel insurance that includes medical coverage. You may be asked to present proof of your policy upon arrival at Havana Airport, so ensure these documents are easily accessible.

Important Notes

  • Allow extra time for immigration: Entry procedures in Cuba can take time, with delays at immigration and baggage collection. It may take up to two hours to complete the process, so please plan accordingly.
  • Prohibited Items for U.S.-bound Travelers: If you plan to travel to the United States after visiting Cuba, note that it is illegal to bring Cuban alcohol or tobacco products into the U.S. More details can be found at CBP Information on Cuba.
  • Other Nationalities or Residents: If you reside in the UK or Ireland but do not hold a passport from the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or Japan, please check directly with the Cuban consulate to determine your visa requirements, as we may not be able to provide a tourist card for you. If you reside outside the UK/Ireland, you will need to arrange your visa independently.

We’re here to help you prepare for a smooth arrival in Cuba. If you have questions about your visa or entry requirements, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

For this trip, there are no mandatory vaccinations; however, it’s recommended that travelers are up to date on Tetanus and Hepatitis A vaccinations. While there is no risk of malaria in the regions we visit, Dengue fever and Zika virus are known risks. Both are viral diseases spread by mosquitoes, primarily during the day, and there is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available for either.

To reduce your risk of mosquito-borne illnesses, we recommend taking the usual precautions, such as wearing long clothing, using insect repellent, and staying indoors during peak mosquito activity at dawn and dusk. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult with your doctor before booking your trip, as Zika virus can be harmful to unborn babies.

General Health and Fitness
This trip involves active exploration, so it’s important that all travelers are in good physical health to participate fully and safely. Please review the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage the trip. If you are feeling unwell prior to departure, please stay at home and contact us to discuss alternative arrangements.

Consult Your Doctor
Before traveling, we strongly recommend consulting your doctor or a travel health clinic for personalized medical advice, updates on recommended vaccinations, and any necessary travel health preparations. It’s also advisable to bring a basic first aid kit and any personal medications in their original packaging, as medical supplies may not be readily available in some areas.

Important Notes
If you are carrying prescription medication, please check for any restrictions or requirements through your government’s foreign travel advice. Our team reserves the right to exclude any traveler from the trip if, in the opinion of our group leader or local representative, they cannot safely complete the itinerary due to health concerns.

Please note that health information can change rapidly, so stay informed and prepared to enjoy a safe and healthy trip.

Food in Cuba
Cuban cuisine is simple and hearty, though it may lack some of the variety and flavors found in other regions. Due to trade restrictions and resource limitations, certain ingredients are difficult to obtain, and meals typically consist of straightforward dishes with basic ingredients. Most meals include a staple of rice and beans, served with meat (often chicken or pork) or fish, and accompanied by a salad or side of vegetables. On the coast, you’ll find fresh seafood, including abundant and affordable lobster. Cuba’s food scene is gradually improving, but it remains relatively basic and can be more expensive than expected.

While snacks are not widely available in Cuba, especially in rural areas, we recommend bringing your own favorites, such as energy bars or trail mix. Quick lunches on the go can be challenging to find, as Cubans traditionally eat two main meals a day. We provide packed lunches during excursions, and there will be opportunities to stop for water and fruit along the way. Rum lovers, however, will be pleased—Cuba offers a great selection, from Havana Club and Black Tears to Ron Santiago and Caney, ensuring that you’ll get a true taste of Cuban culture.

Dining Flexibility
To give you the freedom to explore Cuba’s diverse dining options, not all meals are included in the trip price. This flexibility allows you to choose where, what, and with whom to eat, giving you control over your budget as well. Your group leader will recommend dining spots and join the group for meals, though you’re welcome to venture out on your own. Dining together with the group can be a great way to sample a variety of dishes and enjoy each other’s company, but participation is optional.

Dietary Requirements
We strive to accommodate different dietary needs, but options may be limited compared to what you’re used to. Vegetarians, for instance, can expect a basic rotation of rice, beans, omelets, and salad, which may become repetitive over time. For those with more specific requirements—such as vegan, gluten-free, or lactose-intolerant diets—options may be even more limited, so bringing extra snacks is advised. Additionally, vegetarian meals are often priced similarly to those with meat due to the cost of vegetables in Cuban markets.

If you have specific dietary requirements, please inform us in advance so we can help make arrangements. While roadside eateries may offer limited options, the privately-owned paladares in cities and towns typically have more choices. These cozy, family-run establishments often seat fewer guests but provide a more personalized experience.

Drinking Water
We provide some bottled drinking water on the bus for convenience. Please be aware that public fountains and tap water in Cuba are not safe for drinking. We strongly recommend using bottled water throughout your trip to ensure safe hydration and avoid any potential health risks.

Things to Bring
Due to limited snack availability and minimal options in rural areas, we suggest packing a few favorite snacks, such as chocolates, muesli bars, or energy snacks. Staying hydrated is essential, so a water bottle is a must. Wet wipes and a small bottle of hand sanitizer can also be useful, especially when dining out.

Embrace Cuba’s straightforward culinary style, enjoy local flavors, and make the most of this unique cultural experience. Though food may be simple, Cuban hospitality—and a good glass of rum—are never in short supply!

Weather in Cuba

Cuba’s dry season spans from November to April, with December to March being the peak months for tourism. During this time, the weather is typically mild and pleasant, ideal for exploring the island. From May to October, Cuba experiences high humidity, frequent rain, and a potential risk of hurricanes, particularly from August to October.

The hottest months, July and August, are popular with visitors but can be challenging due to high temperatures (averaging around 28°C/82°F) and occasional heavy rain. Cuba enjoys an average of six hours of sunshine per day, with a fairly constant humidity of around 62%. For those interested in water activities, the sea temperature is usually comfortable, ranging between 24°C and 28°C (75°F-82°F) year-round.

Be prepared for variable weather depending on the season, and pack accordingly to make the most of your time on this beautiful island!

Spending Money
Everyone has their own spending habits, so it’s important to budget according to your preferences. Plan for optional expenses such as additional meals, drinks, shopping, laundry, and activities not included in the tour. To avoid surprises, make sure you’ve thoroughly reviewed the itinerary and inclusions, so you know what’s covered and what you may need to pay for during the trip.

Cuba Currency & Cash
The official currency in Cuba is the Cuban Peso (CUP), also known as Moneda Nacional (M.N.). This is the only legal currency in Cuba, and it’s important to use your CUP before leaving the country, as it’s illegal to remove currency from Cuba. While CUP is required for local transactions, EUR and USD are widely accepted in many private establishments, but exchange rates vary significantly between official banks and private vendors.

We recommend bringing EUR or USD in small denominations (5, 10, and 20 notes) and waiting to exchange money until you meet your tour leader, who can guide you on the best exchange options. Official exchange houses, known as CADECAs, are available in major cities and large hotels, though they can be unreliable and may offer less favorable rates. Other currencies, such as GBP or CAD, can also be exchanged in Cuba, though it’s generally easier to exchange EUR or USD prior to departure for a more predictable rate.

Accessing Funds in Cuba
We strongly recommend bringing enough cash to last your entire stay in Cuba, as ATMs can be unreliable and may not accept foreign cards, especially those linked to U.S.-based banks (including Travelex, Westpac, and Citibank). Cash withdrawals from ATMs incur a 3% fee, and cards issued by U.S. banks are not accepted at all. For large or emergency expenses, having a debit or credit card as a backup may be useful, but don’t rely on it for everyday purchases. In some cases taking money from ATM machines may not be possible at all. Do not rely on your bank or credit cards.

Meals Not Included
For meals that aren’t covered in the itinerary, we suggest budgeting EUR 40-60 per day to ensure you have flexibility in dining choices.

Tipping
Tipping is a significant part of Cuban culture and tourism, as government-set wages are low. If you’re satisfied with the service, we encourage tipping where appropriate. Hold on to small notes and coins for easier tipping. Tips are generally given to restaurant servers, guesthouse hosts, guides, drivers, and other service providers. We recommend tipping your tour leader directly if you feel they provided exceptional service. As a guideline, EUR 2-4 per person, per day is common for group leaders, though this is entirely at your discretion.

In general, we suggest budgeting around EUR 10-15 per day for tipping across various services.

Contingency Funds
Unforeseen events can sometimes require itinerary changes or additional expenses, especially in cases of severe weather, natural disasters, or transport strikes. While we plan for every eventuality, it’s wise to have access to a contingency fund of approximately USD 500 for emergencies or itinerary adjustments. Having this buffer ensures that you’re prepared for any unexpected situations that may arise during the trip.

Commissions
We understand that commissions from recommended shops or services are common in the tourism industry. To manage this transparently, any contributions from recommended suppliers go into a centralized fund, which we reinvest in the business to ensure quality service. This helps maintain the standard you expect on our trips. While we strive to recommend the best local products and experiences, we encourage you to share your feedback to help us continuously improve.

What to Take

Essential Equipment
Packing the right essentials can help you stay comfortable and prepared for your journey in Cuba. Here are some items we recommend:

  • Filter Water Bottle: A reusable filter water bottle is highly recommended to reduce plastic waste and ensure safe drinking water. (Exodus has partnered with Water-to-Go, which offers a 15% discount for first-time buyers and donates 15% of the purchase value to the Exodus Travels Foundation.)
  • Sunglasses and Sunhat: Protect yourself from the sun, which can be intense throughout the year.
  • Sunscreen: Essential for sun protection, as it can be expensive and hard to find in Cuba.
  • Waterproof Rain Poncho or Waterproofs: Sudden rain showers are common, so a lightweight poncho or waterproof jacket is ideal.
  • Sports Shoes: Comfortable for walking and light activities.
  • Swimwear: For beach days and swimming.
  • Torch (Flashlight): Useful during frequent power outages, especially in rural areas.
  • Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes are common, so repellent is crucial.
  • Hand Sanitiser: Helps with hygiene, especially in places with limited facilities.
  • Power Bank: Keeping a power bank charged can be invaluable during electricity blackouts.

Important Note: GPS devices (including GPS watches) are subject to import restrictions in Cuba. Avoid bringing them into the country. Mobile phones, tablets, and laptops are permitted, but inbuilt GPS must be switched off.

Optional Equipment

  • Light Clothing with Full Coverage: Long-sleeved shirts and trousers for evenings can help prevent mosquito bites.
  • Reusable Straw: Environmentally friendly and reduces plastic waste.
  • Travel Beach Towel: For beach outings or water-based activities.
  • Alarm Clock or Watch: Useful if you prefer not to rely on your phone.
  • Reusable Tissues or Wet Wipes: Handy for freshening up, especially in rural areas.
  • Small Padlock: For added security on your bag, especially during travel.
  • Ear Plugs: Useful for light sleepers or to reduce noise in shared accommodations.
  • Phrase Book: A few basic Spanish phrases can enhance interactions with locals.

Cuba has a shortage of many basic items, shopping is very limited (often with long queues), and items are expensive. Cubans endure these shortages with remarkable resilience. We recommend bringing any medication and toiletries that you need for the entire trip, as well as packing a few extra to give out along the way. Cubans struggle to get hold of even the most basic medications so these make incredibly useful gifts if you have extra space in your luggage. The following items are incredibly hard to buy in Cuba: painkillers, antihistamine, sunscreen, insect repellent, hydrocortisone cream, soap, sanitary products, razors, moisturisers, shampoo and conditioner, deodorant. If you want to make friends for life, taking chocolate, tea, coffee, sweets, nuts and other snacks will also be hugely appreciated in Cuba.

Special Items for Donation

Cuba experiences frequent shortages of basic goods, and many items can be expensive and difficult to find. If you have extra space in your luggage, consider bringing items to donate. Here are some suggested items that are greatly appreciated:

  • Toiletries and Medications: Painkillers, antihistamines, hydrocortisone cream, soap, sanitary products, razors, moisturizers, shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant are all in short supply.
  • Snacks and Treats: Items like chocolate, tea, coffee, sweets, and nuts are a rare luxury for many Cubans.
  • Children’s Items and School Supplies: Good-condition second-hand clothes, shoes, and school supplies (pens, pencils, notebooks) are highly valued.
  • Second-Hand Electronics: Simple mobile phones with chargers are especially helpful.

If you wish to donate items, your group leader can provide guidance on where and how to distribute them. Sanitary items are particularly scarce, and your guide can assist with distribution through local partnerships. Please avoid handing items directly to children; instead, discuss distribution options with your guide to ensure donations are given appropriately.
